South Lancs Bat Group run a series of workshops every year to educate their members about bats. Last year, I attended their workshops on Introduction to Bats, Bat Walks and Talks and Bat Detectors and I highly recommend them to everyone keen to learn more about bats. I missed Bat Law and Bat ID last year and was determined to attend this time – it was well worth it. We spent the morning learning all about how bats are protected, what this means in the real world and spent time understanding the new Natural England bat survey licences – not as straightforward as they look. In the afternoon, we studied the features of British bat species in detail through a slideshow and picture quiz so that next time we are shown a bat in the hand, we’ll have some idea what it is ! Ideal if you, like me, have spent a lot of time listening to bats on the detector but haven’t much experience in bat handling.
If you are local and interested in bats I highly recommend you join the group – see the website or look for South Lancs Bat Group on Facebook to find out what we are up to next !
